Just two days ago was the “Day without Immigrants,” a protest that included immigrants (legal and otherwise) taking the day off work to show how essential they are to America’s economy.

Those who participated apparently can’t understand that opposing illegal immigration isn’t the same as opposing all immigration (you’d think it’s pretty obvious given the whole “illegal” part). The protest is against President Donald Trumps “anti-(illegal) immigrant” rhetoric, and his travel ban that was struck down before this protest even occurred.

Thousands of business nationwide participated, mostly thanks to restaurant owners (who disproportionately employ immigrants) who wanted to show “solidarity” with their staff. Others participated by not showing up for work. While most of those in the latter category were smart enough to get permission from their employers to take off work, others treated the protest as a holiday - and what happened next cost them more than just a day’s wages.

According to News Channel 5: A total of 18 people were fired from one business after joining the nation-wide protest “A Day Without Immigrants.” In Nolensville, nearly 20 employees at Bradley Coatings, Incorporated told their supervisors on Wednesday they’d be taking part as well. Then, on Thursday they were told they no longer had jobs.

And that’s not all! As ABC Tulsa reported in California, A dozen workers at a Catoosa restaurant are without a job after getting fired for skipping work as a show of support for “A Day Without Immigrants.” The restaurant workers are all Hispanic and say it was important to them to participate in the national protest. But they didn’t think it would cost them their jobs. “They feel like they’ve been unfairly terminated,” said a friend, translating for the employees.

You can decide for yourself whether or not that “translating for the employees” comment signifies their immigration status.

In South Carolina, KHOU reported that Juvenito Quintana and 20 others all missed work on February 16th and right the next day, they got a letter from Encore Boat Builders LLC in Lexington. The letter said they were being terminated for no show/ no call in. Their last day listed as February 16th, the day of the protest.

The protests didn’t manage to get Donald Trump to reverse his stance on illegal immigration, but they did cost more immigrants their jobs than Trump has. Great job guys.
