Whatever else one thinks about President Trump, clearly the man has the ability to charm even some of his most dedicated enemies.
He demonstrated this ability yet again with his response to Hurricane Harvey, a natural disaster progressives in the Democrat Party and the media seemed to hope would be as devastating to the Trump White House as it was to Houston. As most will remember, Trump’s response to Harvey was attacked almost as soon as the first raindrops began falling on Texas. Trump was either visiting Texas too early and hurting rescue efforts, displaying a lack of empathy for the hurricane survivors, or - believe it or not - wearing an inappropriate hat.
All that’s missing is Kanye West saying Trump didn’t care for black people.
However, Trump’s response to Harvey has elicited begrudging respect for the commander in chief.
As the Washington Examiner observesPresident Trump had a friendly meeting with two of his biggest critics in the House after visiting with victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas on Saturday.
Reps. Al Green, D-Texas, and Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, both met with Trump on the steps at Air Force One at Ellington Field in Houston as the president departed to visit flood victims in Louisiana. Both Green and Lee have advocated for Trump’s impeachment in the past. Green has actually filed articles of impeachment; while Jackson has also supported the notion of using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump.
“Trump seemed to speak in a very friendly way with Green, and they shook hands several times,” according to a White House pool report on the encounter. “At one point, Green put his hand on the president’s elbow as they spoke. It all seemed very friendly.”Trump was also able to charm many outside of Congress who had an unkind view of him, as evident by these tweets from a reporter for ABC News:

President Trump has earned praise for both his personal response and the response from his White House to Harvey, even from those who have considered (and from those who still do consider) his administration this nation’s greatest disaster of all.
