As political correctness continues to erode the fabric of our republic, one small insignificant issue at a time, the super liberal city of Los Angeles has decided it’s going to scrap Columbus Day after getting pressured by Native American groups, in conjunction with progressive social justice warriors.
To the left, Christopher Columbus is some wicked, awful individual who came here to spread disease and kill Indians, bent on conquest and the destruction of an entire group’s way of life. The real beauty of this situation is that despite the holiday being taken off the city’s calendar and exchanged for one that celebrates “indigenous native people,” city employees will still get their pay.
According to BizPacReview:
The holiday, which falls on the second Monday in October, will be used to commemorate “indigenous, aboriginal and native people,” much to the chagrin of Italian-American groups, the Los Angeles Times reported.
But fear not lefty fans of government spending, the politically correct replacement ensured the day will still be a paid holiday for government employees.Italian-Americans said they supported the idea of an Indigenous People’s Day, and would celebrate it with Native Americans, but asked for it to be held on another day.
“On behalf of the Italian community, we want to celebrate with you,” Federated Italo-Americans of Southern California President Ann Potenza to a room of Native American activists. “We just don’t want it to be at the expense of Columbus Day.”
Councilman Mike Bonin said that “This gesture of replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples is a very small step in apologizing and making amends.”Beverly Hills resident John Giovanni Corda responded to the decision by asking, “Why don’t you stop picking on Christopher Columbus as though you’re picking on our people? We never hurt you. We never wanted to hurt you.”
Corda is referring to how it seems as if the city government is targeting Italian-Americans as if they are the ones to blame for some sort of perceived injustice. This is precisely the sort of behavior that made so many people fall in love with President Trump, and is likely to push even more folks into his camp in the long run.
If liberals really want to improve race relations, perhaps they ought to consider changing their platform in order to allow more economic opportunities to flood into the city and give folks in need a chance to excel?
