In the wake of the tragedy that took place in Charlottesville, many spent the next week trying to find someone on whom to pin the blame. As usual, many in the media somehow blamed Trump for the killing. Others were more reasonable, assigning blame to the murderer as well as the white supremacists and the Antifa agitators. In reality, there was plenty of blame to go around.

Sadly, while the sides battled each other for control of the narrative, one detail was being overlooked by almost everyone. How was the violence allowed to get out of hand in the first place? After all, there were plenty of police on hand during the rally. How did they fail to maintain order?

While the media largely ignored this question, residents of Charlottesville wanted answers. In the first city council meeting since the tragedy, local residents showed up to voice their disapproval with the lack of police action.

Three people were arrested in the chaos of the first Charlottesville council meeting Monday since the terrible attack that took the life of counter-protester Heather Heyer, and injured others.

Outraged members of the public assailed the council and the mayor with accusations and pointed questions about how the fatal attack was permitted to happen. Many called for the resignation of Mayor Mike Signer, who called for the council meeting to be temporarily suspended.

Resident expressed outrage that the council seemed unwilling to provide an explanation:

“Why did you think that you could walk in here and do business as usual after what happened on the 12th?” community activist Nikuyah Walker said.

“Who’s streets? Our streets?!” they chanted. At one point two protesters held up a large sign that read “blood on your hands” while standing on top of the council desks.

Three people were arrested for speaking out:

“You just dragged out three people,” the man continued, “because they were expressing their freedom of speech.”

The three people were charged with disorderly conduct or obstruction.

Perhaps even more shocking, the meeting appeared to bring people from both sides of the spectrum together to demand answers. Authorities in Charlottesville have largely attempted to remain silent, yet there’s no doubt they share in some of the blame for the way events unfolded.

Instead of providing answers to residents of their community, authorities in Charlottesville allowed the meeting to descend into chaos. Evidently, they still haven’t learned their lesson.
