The firing of Steve Bannon from his role as White House Chief Strategist today was praised in many circles today — ranging from Democrats to Wall Street traders to Hollywood celebrities.

However, among many conservatives, the reaction has been decidedly negative.

According to The Hill:

A number of conservatives expressed fury and dismay on Friday after news broke that President Trump has parted ways with his chief strategist, Stephen Bannon.

Bannon is a hero on the right and credited with harnessing Trump’s message of economic populism during the campaign.
One of the loudest among the boo birds has been conservative pundit Ann Coulter, a Trump supporter so dedicated she wrote a book titled “In Trump We Trust.”

Coulter took to Twitter to post a series of mocking tweets in reaction to Bannon’s departure to argue that Trump had given in to media pressure:

And Conservative Review makes the case that with Bannon out, “the only ones left are liberals”:

With his ouster, the New Yorkers have taken over. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump hold the keys to the president’s agenda, and they will undoubtedly push it in an even more liberal direction.

However, the views of those quoted above may be overstating how reliable an ally Bannon was for conservatives, and overstating as well Bannon’s conservative influence on Trump.

Conservatives don’t advocate tax hike on the wealthy , for example.

Conservatives should hope that the next chief strategist - assuming there is a next chief strategist - will be more aligned with their vision than the populist Bannon. Laura Ingraham, one of the nation’s most popular talk show hosts and a Fox news commentator,
says that, depending upon who replaces Bannon, this may signal a shift to the right by the White House.

Perhaps Stephen Miller, rumored to be Bannon’s replacement, although called a Bannon ally, may just be far enough to the right to satisfy Trump’s conservative supporters, even Ann Coulter.
