Hat tip to local South Florida BizPax review and friend Michael Dorstewitz for reporting on this doozy. While substituting for Ed Schultz on The Ed Show, host Joy Reid attacked former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin for displaying a Christmas tree while discussing the holiday’s Christian origins. Got that?
To supposedly prove her point, Reid then quoted Jeremiah 10:10:
For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. Like a scare crow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.
Reid then says: “Now, a Christmas purist wouldn’t want to stray from the Bible on Christmas, would she? If Sarah Palin wants us to believe there’s only one true meaning of Christmas, she can keep on pretending.”
Aside from convoluted reasoning, there’s another glaring problem with Reid’s example. It was from the Old Testament. Jeremiah was an Old Testament prophet referring to idol worship at a time before Jesus Christ came into the world.
Being a Christian is based upon acceptance of Christ’s teachings and accepting Him into your heart. Christ came into the world to offer Himself as a sacrifice for all mankind, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Christmas trees are related to the holiday celebration of this season and the secular remembrance of old St. Nicholas.
It’s obvious that Ms. Reid, in a typical liberal progressive attempt to denigrate Gov. Palin at any possible opportunity, is terribly mislead, uninformed, and sadly misguided in her assertion — but then again that seems to be the modus operandi at MSNBC.
Christmas morning here in Steamboat Springs we gathered as a family and read Bible scripture from a daily devotional, “Jesus Calling, Enjoying Peace in His Presence” by Sarah Young, that articulated the meaning of Christmas — Jesus sacrificing the riches of Heaven to become poor in order to enrich our lives. As I read the devotional and my wife and daughters read the accompanying four verses of scripture, there was a small Christmas tree behind us.
Today is our last full day out here in the winter wonderland of Steamboat Springs Colorado. And Ms. Reid, the Christmas decorations and lights on the snow-covered pine trees where we’re staying have been spectacular. It creates a splendid ambience and last night, combined with the Friday night ski slope lights off Mt Werner was truly memorable.
If I may make a recommendation to the producers at MSNBC and Ms Reid: stay away from commentating on topics you don’t comprehend — that probably means just discussing things like American Idol, The Voice, or other very simple reality TV shows — even the weather is probably too complex. We know progressive socialists and secular humanists like you despise those of us who have embraced a Judeo-Christian faith but try not to embarrass yourselves.
So my friends, what topics do you suggest MSNBC covers where their hosts can display some basic competence?
